Master should be a gentleman well educated himself, willing to devote himself to the cause of Education, and not over twenty-five years of age. The younger he is, the more readily and exactly will he acquire the Chinese language; but at the same time it is desirable that he should have a maturity of judgment and character. If a man could be found with the qualifications just indicated, who had some experience in the management of a large school, that would be an additional qualification of much importance, But the Board of Education have thought, con- sidering the peculiar nature of the position for which the Master is wanted, that actual experience in a school in England or Scotland is not to be weighed against the thorough general education, and willingness to undertake the situation con amore, which I have specified.

His Lordship the Bishop of Victoria, who is President of the Board of Education, is now in England; and in case of two or more gentlemen being recommended by yourself and the Principals of the Universities mentioned above, he has been requested to undertake to select the one who shall receive the appointment. I enclose his address; and if you know any gen- tleman whom you can fully recommend, and who is willing to come to Hongkong, I would request you further to send him to His Lordship, who will give him all further information that he may desire.

The Salary of £500 will commence from the day of the Master's leaving England; but it is understood that he will defray his own outfit and passage. The Bishop is authorized to advance a sum not exceeding £200 for this purpose, if necessary.

The Board of Education hope that the importance of the matter will excuse them for troubling you with this application.

Sir,

I have the honour to be,

Your most obedient Servant,

A

WM. ROBINSON,
